A Cauldron of 31 Creepy-Cute Critters Brewing Up Some Spooktober Spirit

What's Spooktober without its iconic animals?

It's funny to think about how we assign animal symbolism to literally everything. There are animals representing human emotions and traits, noble family crests, about half of superheroes, and the literal seasons. You can say you're "hungry like a wolf", that your favorite character is a man wearing a bat suit, and that you drive a car with a lion's logo. We use animals to represent anything and everything in our mere human lives, and that's especially true when it comes to the spookiest month of the year.

October is filled with mysticism, witchery, and many animal representations of the spoopy side of things (no, that's not a typo, if you understood that we're soul siblings of the same witch coven). And while some of the animals we historically chose to represent the fear and mystery of October really are a little scary, some are ironically cute. Like black cats, for example. They're the literal cutest (I should know, I have a black cat). And crows are actually such smart and adorable birds. It's no wonder they're adored as they are. And owls… owls! They're not just scary, they're also so smart.

And yes, some of the other Spooktober animals are a little more creepy, but it's more like creepy-cute. Spiders, moths, bats - they're all secretly adorable. It's a classic case of a tough exterior and soft, marshmallow-like interior. And guess what? All the creepiness fades away when they're all presented through the humor of memes. So get ready, fellow witches and Halloween enthusiasts, because the Spooktober creepy-cute animals are here to actually make you smile.

  • I wanted to stop and contemplate about how most of the spooky animals used to represent October are all black or dark. I guess it all comes from the association with witches and the night, when all scary things happen. It's a long-standing historical stereotype, but it still lingers to this day. Black cats, bats with mostly black or brown coats, and ravens that look like darkness itself. They're all perfectly October-colored, and honestly - I think they're beautiful. Or, more accurate to the season, they're BOO-tiful.
